Do universities decide admission based on your self reported grades?

3 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by Anonymous

I applied to a university that requests self reported grades. In a recent e-mail they told me to self report "to determine [my] admissibility".

Does this mean they will determine admission based on my self reported grades?

Chances of UTSC Co-op Computer Science Acceptance?

3 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Wondering what my general chances are to make it there. These are my current marks, including this semesters but consider they are not mid-term yet but more of a "quarter term"

ENG4U1 - 81%
MHF4U1 - 80%
AMI4M1 - 97%
AMR4M1 - 97%
Below are all semester 2 marks, so not even mid term yet.
CIA4U1 - 86%
ICS4U1 - 91%
MCV4U1 - 86%
SPH4U1 - 82%

Do you think I'll be accepted in March or in May after mid terms are sent? I had a 86% average in grade 11 if that helps.

Admission Questions? Ask a Current UBC Student!

Hi guys,

I always remember finding this forum really useful back when I was applying for universities in 2012, and I'd like to offer you the opportunity to actually get some hard knowledge about admissions rather than just hearsay. Though I'm in Sauder, I can answer any questions regarding direct entry to all UBC programs, Sauder transfer applications, and general university stuff.

You should all also take a look at the holy grail of UBC admissions, specifically table 18 where all admission averages for all programs for entry in 2013W are outlined.

Hope to see you all at UBC in September!

Tax Fraud: How Not To Become A Victim This Filing Season

The Internal Revenue Service has issued a lot of warnings about tax-related fraud. It’s on the rise, and it can be a real pain if you’re a victim.

If you haven’t filed yet, this is not the year to procrastinate. As I reported this week, the IRS said that threatening and aggressive phone calls by someone impersonating an IRS agent take the top spot in its annual list of “Dirty Dozen” tax scams.

The Federal Trade Commission said it received 109,063 complaints last year about tax-identity theft. It received 54,690 complaints about IRS imposter scams, up substantially from the 2,545 scams reported in 2013.

So what should you do if you try to file your tax return and realize someone else — a crook — has beat you to it and received a refund based on fraudulent return? The Washington Post’s Jonnelle Marte provides a road map to help if you’ve been a victim of tax fraud.

One of the first things you should do is report it, Marte says. “Fake tax returns need to be reported directly to the identity protection division of the IRS. Victims need to fill out an Identity Theft Affidavit to create an alert on their account,” she writes.

You should also check your credit reports. If someone has enough information to file a fake return, they have enough to cause other damage to your credit history.

Color of Money Question of the Week

What drives you nuts about tax season? Send your comments to Put “Taxing Season” in the subject line.

New to you this tax season

Looking for a nice roundup of tax issues you need to know about? Then check out the New York Times’s Jan M. Rosen’s tips for navigating the 2015 tax season.

“What’s new this tax season? In a word: Obamacare. That’s the answer given by many tax professionals,” writes Rosen, who provides tips on deductions for job hunting, state sales tax and medical expenses.

If you’ve got a question about your refund, check out these most frequently asked questions posted by the IRS.

And Jim T. Miller, writing for the Huffington Post, provides a rundown of the IRS filing requirements for this tax season.

Tax challenges for gay couples

It’s a challenging tax season for some married gay couples.

“This tax season is particularly bitter for gays and lesbians who live in states that still don’t recognize same-sex marriage,” writes Ben Steverman for Bloomberg. “After decades together, many are filing their first joint tax returns. In a growing number of states, this is easy: An additional 20 states have legalized same-sex marriage since the beginning of 2014. But in Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, and nine other states, gay couples are still treated as legal strangers. They face extra paperwork, heftier tax-prep fees, and tax questions that puzzle even the experts.”

Steverman profiles one couple who have to file five tax returns. “First, they complete a joint, official federal return that they’ll file with the IRS,” he writes. “Then, they must each fill out — but not file — a federal return as if they were single people, shadow returns they’ll use to prepare their state tax returns.”

Hey everyone,

I'm currently at Western in my first year in medical sciences! Feel free to ask me anything about the program, and I'll try to help with anything else academic related.

I'm also living in residence, and I'm residence sophing next year, so feel free to ask me about that as well :)

I'm very involved with the school, so you can ask me about: SAO, residence life, volunteering on/off campus, clubs, council, resources at Western, Oweek...anything!

U of T Life Science Discussion

1 reply • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hey guys. I just thought it would be nice if future U of T life science students (admitted/waiting for admission)can get together and discuss anything here, like concerns, studying, having fun in Toronto etc. Feel free to share anything!

I got accepted 2 weeks ago with a 89 average. Gotta bump it up for the scholarship! I'm from a small BC city, Victoria so I'm super pumped to experience the vibrant city life in Toronto as well as studying my head off starting in September. My only concern is that I heard there are like 2000 students listening to the same lecture there so I think it will be hard to find new friends.

Sauder/MES & Science CSP - Ask Us Anything

16 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by jack love
Prospective students! A year ago I recall being in your very shoes when I began applying for university. I know how overwhelming it can be so I'm just leaving this out here if anyone wants to ask me and my friend some general/specific questions about our experience. If you're not interested in Science or Commerce, you can still ask us some specific questions as we have friends in other faculties.

A little about us:

We are high school friends from Surrey, BC who were not part of any IB/AP program other than an AP Calculus course we took. We had fairly high averages and decent extra-curricular involvement (won't go into details for now), but we also know some friends who did not have either and still made it (don't fret!).

I only applied to SFU and UBC. For UBC, I applied to Sauder with Engineering as my second choice and I was accepted into both. It was a tough decision choosing between faculties and I did a LOT of research so if you have any questions about that I'm your guy. I had received a scholarship from SFU at the time also, but I ended up picking Sauder simply because it felt like the right fit for me. Two weeks later I found out I won the Major Entrance Scholarship which was very cool and unexpected.

My friend was accepted into UBC, McGill and SFU. He plans on entering med school and knows quite a bit about the process. Currently he is in CSP (Coordinated Science Program) and he's also working a part time job.

We're both living on residence (Totem, HMSM) and have friends who commute so we can give you some insight into both.

Hopefully we can be of some assistance to you guys.

Will CS at U of T prepare me for a software engineering career?

1 reply • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
I'm interested in a career in software engineering and I've been doing research on the difference between software engineering and computer science programs. I've received an offer from University of Ottawa for SE, and I'm confident I will be accepted to UoT's CS. I'm wondering if A CS from UoT will allow me to specialize in software engineering. If so, how well compared to software engineering at any other school? Computer science programs seam less specialized in anything in particular, and I'm afraid of being stuck with a degree I have no serious use for, but The UoT prestige is a big part of the reason I'm considering computer science. Is an undergraduate degree even enough to be taken seriously as a software engineer, and which of these degrees is best complemented by business knowledge?
Thanks in advance.

I am not informed about the CSC at all other than the fact that I know it makes inexperienced students more competitive for finance internships and that students take it after first/second year. I will be attending b-school this fall but will not have co-op in the first summer. However, I still want to find a relevant job. Will the CSC help me out? Is it even possible to complete before university? I will have 2 months in the summer free to study.

Anyone going to York/Sheridan Design? [YSDN]

1 reply • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hi there! I was offered admission into YSDN last month and I'm highly considering accepting the offer. It's actually the only design program I applied for and the program itself looks great but I'm a bit hesitant about York's campus life/security or really what people at the school or in the program will be like so I figured I would reach out and hopefully hear from some current or prospective YSDN students! Any thoughts/comments/advice?
