Will CS at U of T prepare me for a software engineering career?

1 reply • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
I'm interested in a career in software engineering and I've been doing research on the difference between software engineering and computer science programs. I've received an offer from University of Ottawa for SE, and I'm confident I will be accepted to UoT's CS. I'm wondering if A CS from UoT will allow me to specialize in software engineering. If so, how well compared to software engineering at any other school? Computer science programs seam less specialized in anything in particular, and I'm afraid of being stuck with a degree I have no serious use for, but The UoT prestige is a big part of the reason I'm considering computer science. Is an undergraduate degree even enough to be taken seriously as a software engineer, and which of these degrees is best complemented by business knowledge?
Thanks in advance.

Canadian Securities Course before university?

I am not informed about the CSC at all other than the fact that I know it makes inexperienced students more competitive for finance internships and that students take it after first/second year. I will be attending b-school this fall but will not have co-op in the first summer. However, I still want to find a relevant job. Will the CSC help me out? Is it even possible to complete before university? I will have 2 months in the summer free to study.

Anyone going to York/Sheridan Design? [YSDN]

1 reply • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hi there! I was offered admission into YSDN last month and I'm highly considering accepting the offer. It's actually the only design program I applied for and the program itself looks great but I'm a bit hesitant about York's campus life/security or really what people at the school or in the program will be like so I figured I would reach out and hopefully hear from some current or prospective YSDN students! Any thoughts/comments/advice?

Laurier BBA- ABS form questions

2 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by N S
hey! so I applied to Laurier's BBA program and i've heard the cutoff is around 87.5%. I'm holding an 85.3%, so I'm definitely filling out my ABS form asap. any tips for writing a "good" ABS? I have a lot of EC's and several hundred hours of community involvement. I consider myself pretty well written.
-tips? what to avoid?
-when did you get accepted to BBA, and with what kind of average/ABS form?
-how are my chances?

thanks so much!

Hey, I am awaiting a response from McGill as I applied for Arts a little earlier on. My average is only 87% and I'm pretty worried. Has anyone heard back for Arts, or is anybody the same situation as me? What is your average? /:

Biomedical Sciences at Waterloo or Medical Sciences at Western????

0 replies • Posted: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC
Hi everyone!
I got accepted to both Biomedical Sciences at Waterloo and Medical Sciences at Western. I'm really confused about which one to go... I've heard Western has a great program for Medicine, but it has a lot of competition... so I'm not too sure.. and Biomedical Sciences at Waterloo has less competition but is the program good?

Does both schools prepare you well for med school and MCAT? which one's better?
What about the overall atmosphere of the two schools?
Overall ??

Please answer my numerous questions lol, this is so confusing and I really depend on these answers since I don't live in Ontario...

thanks everyone!!! :)

Official Q&A with Ivey Admissions and Recruiting

Welcome to this thread where you can ask me anything about the HBA Program and the student experience for all years at Western and Ivey.
To provide you with some background, I recently graduated from the Honors Business Adminstration Program (HBA) this past year and currently working with the school as the HBA Recruiting Associate. I work closely with most areas of the school, including the admissions committee, career management and faculty.
Throughout my years at Western and Ivey I have been involved in a wide variety of activities, most of my time was consumed with residence life and student government; although I have dabbled in a number of club executive positions, intramural activities and a number of different student jobs on campus.

This would be a great forum to dispel some rumours about the program and clear up some of the myths about Ivey. I look forward to our discussions.

Do Universities look at the difficulty of the course?

3 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 06, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
So I'm currently a Grade 12 student, and I was just wondering about how Universities look at courses. I took Grade 12 Physics and Grade 12 chemistry. My average is definitely not as high as it could have been if I had taken only business courses. It is currently sitting at around 89% and will be around 90 to 91% for my top six.

I have applied to business programs, and am wondering at how they screen the averages for applicants. Do universities look at the difficulty of the course (like physics compared to business leadership) and your mark, or do they just look at your top 6 average?

***Was debating between engineering and business, which is why I took science course (yes, i do not wish to pursue engineering anymore)
