UofT: is it worth it?

So I've been accepted to UofT's social sciences and while I am happy, I would like to hear your opinion (i.e. pros and cons) regarding UofT. As for cons, please give me reasons other than 'it's soo hard'

Also, how's st mikes? Do students from st mike face some sort of discrimination because they belong to a 'party' school? Would the atmosphere pose some put pressure on students who aren't necessarily party-goers?

UBC Self Reporting? English and exams marks..

1 reply • Last reply: 7:03AM March 04, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hi, I'm a bit new to Yconic as this is my first forum post. But what I would like know more of is about UBC's self reporting process, and in my case what that would entail if I were to take the English 12 provincial again a second time for a better mark.

I took english 12 in my first semester and finished with 91%. I took the provincial exam and I am still awaiting my mark but I fear that my mark will be terribly low. I have applied already for UBC and Self reporting started, but apparently you need to enter your provincial mark and your class mark for english if you wish to submit it for approval. In my case I know I will likely retake the provincial exam for a better mark. What do I do?

Submit my english mark as an interim mark? or not submit it at all? Or do I just have to face the fact that I will have to submit my possible god awful exam mark?

Chances of getting into Queen's Commerce, Rotman Commerce, Schulich BBA, Ivey AEO and Waterloo AFM?

5 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 04, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hey everyone! I know there's a lot of these posts but I'd really appreciate it if people could provide input!

As you can tell from the subject line, my top choices are Queen's Commerce, Western BMOS + Ivey AEO, Schulich, Waterloo AFM and Rotman Commerce, and I'm wondering what my chances are with my marks and ECs?

I've already been accepted to Ryerson for accounting/finance, University of Toronto Mississauga for commerce, Western for BMOS (still waiting on AEO status though) and Laurier for BBA, but obviously, I want to get into my top choices.

CURRENT MARKS (as of January report card):
Economics: 92
English: 90 (completed in summer school)
Advanced Functions: 88
Calculus and Vectors: 91
Accounting: 91
Business Leadership: 91
French: 84 :(
TOP 6 AVERAGE: 90.5%
OVERALL AVERAGE: 89.5714286%

*My marks are crap, I know. I'm trying to bring them back up to the 92 I had in November.

-Honour Roll/Honour Roll with Distinction recipient
-DECA Ontario: Top 10 Oral Score in Finance (2012) and Top 10 Written Score in Finance (2014)
-Highest Academic Standing in Grade 11 Environmental Science
-Highest Academic Standing in Grade 11 Business
-Lifesaving Society: Bronze Cross certification
-Canadian Red Cross: Standard First Aid certification
-Lifesaving Society: Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor and First Aid Instructor ceritifications
-Lifesaving Society: National Lifeguard Service certification
*As you can see, a lot of my time commitment has been for swimming and lifesaving haha

-Envision India - Co-founder (a charitable initiative which provides art supplies to underprivileged youth in India)
-Charity Week Committee - Assistant Head (plan activities and events as part of a week of student-run events -- pretty big thing at my school, we raise anywhere between $30,000-$50,000 for charity within the week)
-Wellness Committee - leader/ambassador (lead initiatives throughout the year to reduce stigma surrounding youth mental health)
-School newspaper - Editorial Board - Copy editor (write and edit articles)
-Free the Children - member
-Remembrance Day and Anti-Violence Assemblies - member
-Peer Assistance Leaders (PALs) - help make transition for new students to the school in grades 9-12 easier

200+ volunteer hours earned to date
-Leading to Reading - tutored kids from new-immigrant families English (grade 9)
-Assistant Swim Instructor (volunteer) at a community centre (start of grade 10 - end of grade 11) - taught swimming to underprivileged children
-Camp Counsellor at day camp (summer 2013)
-Swim Instructor/Lifeguard at the same day camp (summer 2014)
-Swim Instructor at a local swim centre (January 2015 - present)

So, what are my chances of getting into my choice of commerce/business programs? If you think I can get in, around what time during the year can I expect an offer?

Any help would be super appreciated! :)

I'm not too sure if a thread like this already exists, and I apologize if it does, but here it is.

I haven't seen many threads for Health Sciences this year. I wanted to create a thread that would act as a general go-to-place for discussion. We're all applying, why not ease the stress and just let loose (of course, no spilling your answers! That would be a mess!)

Good luck to everyone applying this year!

Canadian Securities Course before university?

2 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 04, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
I am not informed about the CSC at all other than the fact that I know it makes inexperienced students more competitive for finance internships and that students take it after first/second year. I will be attending b-school this fall but will not have co-op in the first summer. However, I still want to find a relevant job. Will the CSC help me out? Is it even possible to complete before university? I will have 2 months in the summer free to study.

Western BMOS (Ivey question) or Honours Commerce at University of Ottawa?

0 replies • Posted: 7:03AM March 04, 2015 UTC
My marks in my first semester of grade 12 dropped so I couldn't apply to for an aeo status at Ivey, but I really want to go there. I got into the honours commerce program at university of Ottawa with a scholarship, but I was wondering what are my chances of getting in Ivey if I attend Western?
I know BMOS isn't that great of a program, so is it worth the gamble to choose it over Ottawa (especially if I don't get into Ivey)?
Can anyone tell me how successful the program itself is?

Thank you!

Do Universities look at the difficulty of the course?

2 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 04, 2015 UTC by yWE TALK
So I'm currently a Grade 12 student, and I was just wondering about how Universities look at courses. I took Grade 12 Physics and Grade 12 chemistry. My average is definitely not as high as it could have been if I had taken only business courses. It is currently sitting at around 89% and will be around 90 to 91% for my top six.

I have applied to business programs, and am wondering at how they screen the averages for applicants. Do universities look at the difficulty of the course (like physics compared to business leadership) and your mark, or do they just look at your top 6 average?

***Was debating between engineering and business, which is why I took science course (yes, i do not wish to pursue engineering anymore)

Will universities (in Canada and outside Canada) look at my grade 9 marks?

Hey guys! Ok well, I haven't completed grade 9 yet but I was wondering if universities would count my grade 9 marks. My average percentage is 95% so far, but I'm scared that won't be enough for UBC -- Science BSC.

Thanks in advance!

is the University of Waterloo or the University of Alberta better for Engineering?

0 replies • Posted: 7:03AM March 04, 2015 UTC
Hi everyone,

I am currently in grade 12 and was accepted to both universities of Waterloo and Alberta for engineering however I couldn't decide which is better... I am currently accepted as general engineering in Ualberta and environmental engineering in UWaterloo. I want to look for a balance between student life and academics with a nice environment of a community and I highly value co-op programs as well. I don't want engineering to be stressful and torturous (although, lets admit it, it kinda will be) and i want to remember the great memories I would have at University.

I know that they all have their flaws and advantages but are there any experienced engineering graduates, current engineering undergraduates or anyone who can give a bit of insight into both schools in regards to academics, ranking, social life, co-op, and maybe the best thing about both universities versus the worst for the two universities? which one would you guys pick and why?

Also,Do you guys think that first year general will be more useful than going straight into a program? I'm not entirely sure if I will like environmental engineering.

Thanks in advance :)

Do I have a chance at getting into UBC Science?

3 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 04, 2015 UTC by Ashkan Akbari
Hi there, I applied for UBC Van General Science and I'm so worried about getting in! My grade 11 grades were as follows:

Physics 11: 89
Chem 11: 96
AP English 11: 95
French 11: 86
Precalc 11: 86
Social Studies 11: 97
(Those are my academic courses, I didn't count the electives)

Grade 12 marks:

Bio 12: 94
Chem 12: 89
Precal 12: 85
AP English: 98

That is my top 4. By the time I self report I'm hoping to go up a couple percent in Bio and possibly Chem because extra credit is available and teachers at my school will take off single tests u did badly on if the rest of your mark is consistently good to boost us for self reporting, but right now my average is 92%. As for my ECs, I listed being a team leader for a hospital volunteer program, being a lifeguard/instructor and swim coach, starting a business and online store to raise money for Science World and becoming a recognized donor, playing in the school band for 7 years and being a section leader, and being a part of the Future Science Leaders program at science world and conducting research with professors from UBC. Do you think I have a chance? I really am hoping to get my average up to 93ish. :(
