Chances of getting into Queen's Commerce, Rotman Commerce, Schulich BBA, Ivey AEO and Waterloo AFM?

0 replies • Posted: 7:03AM March 02, 2015 UTC
Hey everyone! I know there's a lot of these posts but I'd really appreciate it if people could provide input!

As you can tell from the subject line, my top choices are Queen's Commerce, Western BMOS + Ivey AEO, Schulich, Waterloo AFM and Rotman Commerce, and I'm wondering what my chances are with my marks and ECs?

I've already been accepted to Ryerson for accounting/finance, University of Toronto Mississauga for commerce, Western for BMOS (still waiting on AEO status though) and Laurier for BBA, but obviously, I want to get into my top choices.

CURRENT MARKS (as of January report card):
Economics: 92
English: 90 (completed in summer school)
Advanced Functions: 88
Calculus and Vectors: 91
Accounting: 91
Business Leadership: 91
French: 84 :(
TOP 6 AVERAGE: 90.5%
OVERALL AVERAGE: 89.5714286%

*My marks are crap, I know. I'm trying to bring them back up to the 92 I had in November.

AWARDS AND CERTIFICATIONS:

-Honour Roll/Honour Roll with Distinction recipient
-DECA Ontario: Top 10 Oral Score in Finance (2012) and Top 10 Written Score in Finance (2014)
-Highest Academic Standing in Grade 11 Environmental Science
-Highest Academic Standing in Grade 11 Business
-Lifesaving Society: Bronze Cross certification
-Canadian Red Cross: Standard First Aid certification
-Lifesaving Society: Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor and First Aid Instructor ceritifications
-Lifesaving Society: National Lifeguard Service certification
*As you can see, a lot of my time commitment has been for swimming and lifesaving haha

CLUBS/ACTIVITIES:

-Envision India - Co-founder (a charitable initiative which provides art supplies to underprivileged youth in India)
-Charity Week Committee - Assistant Head (plan activities and events as part of a week of student-run events -- pretty big thing at my school, we raise anywhere between $30,000-$50,000 for charity within the week)
-Wellness Committee - leader/ambassador (lead initiatives throughout the year to reduce stigma surrounding youth mental health)
-School newspaper - Editorial Board - Copy editor (write and edit articles)
-Free the Children - member
-Remembrance Day and Anti-Violence Assemblies - member
-Peer Assistance Leaders (PALs) - help make transition for new students to the school in grades 9-12 easier

VOLUNTEERING/JOBS:
200+ volunteer hours earned to date
-Leading to Reading - tutored kids from new-immigrant families English (grade 9)
-Assistant Swim Instructor (volunteer) at a community centre (start of grade 10 - end of grade 11) - taught swimming to underprivileged children
-Camp Counsellor at day camp (summer 2013)
-Swim Instructor/Lifeguard at the same day camp (summer 2014)
-Swim Instructor at a local swim centre (January 2015 - present)

So, what are my chances of getting into my choice of commerce/business programs? If you think I can get in, around what time during the year can I expect an offer?

Any help would be super appreciated! :)

Within the next week or two, UW is going to be making it's first round of acceptances for the math department. Discuss and share averages here if you're one of the students shooting for a round one acceptance into a math department program!

Good luck!

Laurier vs. Mac vs. Guelph. (Business / commerce)

2 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 02, 2015 UTC by L. Renta
Accepted to Laurier and Acadia, waiting for : Mac commerce, Guelph Marketing mgmt. and St. F.X business. Long term I'm leaning towards a career in marketing or human resources. I'm encouraged by my acceptance to Laurier BUT ... am I a second class citizen there if I DON'T get in to the co-op program ??? In everyone's esteemed opinion, how do the above schools stack up for business/commerce ? I'll have a final admissions average of 90% or just shy of it. I didn't want to apply to Queen's (my brother is there, gotta go my own way !) or Western-Ivey (would rather have a 4 year business specific degree than a chance at a 2 year business degree). Your thoughts ???

Looking for your support and cooperation into whether you think "I'll get into my program of choice", or "they will send me choice for an alternate", or "I wont make it". Honest answers please and thank you.

My current Status:
Function: 80
Calculus: 87
Food and Nutrition: 92
English (private School): 86
Biology (private school): 88
Computer Science: 86

Destautels Question

For Ontario admission requirements, the perquisites are English and Calc and then they say "80% in English and 85% in top 6 math course". What does this mean exactly? Does it mean Calc must be in your top 6 and you must have over 85? Or can only Adv. Functions be in your top 6 with over 85? Does it have to be both? Confused!!

3rd Year Brock BBA/BAcc Co-op student, ask me anything!

34 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 02, 2015 UTC by Hrad

I'm basically always on here so figured might as well make one of these and help out any prospective students.

Background:
- First 2 years spent as BBA Co-op student, secured first coop term through BBA
- Transferred into BAcc Co-op after 2 years
- Currently on co-op

You kinda get the best of both worlds since I have been in all (both) the programs offered at the Goodman School of Business!

And since I know these are gonna be popular Qs:

WHEN SEARCHING FOR 1ST CO-OP:
- Avg (both major and overall) ~80%
- ECs: Leadership position in a club, some entrepreneurial stuff, sports stuff
- Work XP: General accounting internship at no-name organization doing very basic stuff, manual labour

Since attending Brock, I have received interview requests from (in no particular order):
RBC x2, Canadian Tire Financial Services, Imperial Oil (Alberta), Ontario Securities Commission (CPA Approved), Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, Big 4 Audit (Toronto), Suncor (Alberta), TeamBuy.ca, and CPP Investment Board.

Note: These were not all co-op positions, some were just summer internship interviews.

AT TIME OF APPLYING TO UNIVERSITY:
- Rejected from BAcc Co-op
- Accepted to BBA Co-op with 83.5% top 6

So feel free to ask me anything and I'll try to answer your Qs as best as I can!

*Even if nobody has posted in this topic for a while, feel free to do so, chances are I'm still lurking on here

Importance of Linux for UW Compsci

The recent post about a laptop for UW eng reminded me of something:

I heard from a few people that having linux or being able to run linux software is critical to passing certain courses at UW. Of course I can run software in a virtualbox, but its clunky and slow and uneffective.

Is it worth sideloading Linux onto my laptop? Or am I not going to need it at UW?

I am having a huge dilemma whether to go to Brock or Carleton. I've applied to Brock, Carleton, McMaster and Guelph but I don't really want to go to guelph anymore and McMaster is losing my interest.

Ive applied to Criminology and Criminal Justice in Concentration of Psychology at Carleton, Psychology and Socio at Brock (got accepted) and Socio at McMaster. If anyone knows details about these programs especially the one at Carleton, please tell me because it's a program that isn't available anywhere else. Ultimately, I want to do Criminology and Psychology.

Do I have a chance at getting into UBC Science?

2 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 02, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hi there, I applied for UBC Van General Science and I'm so worried about getting in! My grade 11 grades were as follows:

Physics 11: 89
Chem 11: 96
AP English 11: 95
French 11: 86
Precalc 11: 86
Social Studies 11: 97
(Those are my academic courses, I didn't count the electives)

Grade 12 marks:

Bio 12: 94
Chem 12: 89
Precal 12: 85
AP English: 98

That is my top 4. By the time I self report I'm hoping to go up a couple percent in Bio and possibly Chem because extra credit is available and teachers at my school will take off single tests u did badly on if the rest of your mark is consistently good to boost us for self reporting, but right now my average is 92%. As for my ECs, I listed being a team leader for a hospital volunteer program, being a lifeguard/instructor and swim coach, starting a business and online store to raise money for Science World and becoming a recognized donor, playing in the school band for 7 years and being a section leader, and being a part of the Future Science Leaders program at science world and conducting research with professors from UBC. Do you think I have a chance? I really am hoping to get my average up to 93ish. :(

Just got waitlisted for sciences at UBC... is it all over? (IB)

Anonymous

Hello,

I've had my heart set on UBC for quite a while now, and then just this afternoon I got the news that I was waitlisted on their student portal.

"We have evaluated your application and due to the competitive nature of your program, we are not able to offer you admission. Your application is currently wait-listed. Any changes to your application and wait-list status will be noted here and a final decision will be available to you by June 15th. Please note that a large number of wait-listed candidates do not receive offers of admission, and we encourage you to make alternate plans accordingly."

I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what my chances are of getting accepted, if at all. I'm a IB diploma student with a total predicted mark of 33. My predicted mark breakdown is:
6 - Chemistry SL, Geography HL
5 - Math SL, Spanish SL (final), English Lit. HL
4 - Physics HL (Trying hard to bring this up - is this mark the main cause of me being waitlisted?)
with 2 Predicted marks for TOK & EE.

Does anyone know of IB students who got accepted with around a 33 predicted? I realise that their website has listed a "recommended" average of 29-32 for admission, and I'd like to think my PP was strong (Good ECs, but who knows, since it's relative scoring). My waitlist message doesn't even say the "Strong candidate", which it appears a lot of others have.

Do people go into Consulting right out of undergrad??

So I've always been confused about this. On employment reports of undergrad schools like Ivey, Mcgill, queens etc, it shows percentage of people that went into consulting. Is this right out of undergrad? or is it long term surveys.

So my question is do people go into consulting right away or do you need experience first to consult

Med School in the UK from high school Q&A

A small number of high school students from Canada goes abroad every year to medical school in the UK around 80 or so each year. Around 300 (mostly people who have finished undergrad) go to Ireland each year. Many of them want to return to Canada, go to the US or stay in the UK. Depending on your route, you might want to know more about the difficulties you might face including residency, completing, studying in a different country.

I'm currently a 2nd year studying medicine in the UK, I've done a lot of research into residencies, the difficulties an IMG will face etc etc. So if you have questions, PM me or post on this topic.

I am curious between the two. Which is better in your opinion?
Which one is more prominent between the two? Why?
Which is harder to get into?
Which is harder to maintain high marks?
Are employers more biased to pick their future workers from these schools? If so, which one?
Finally, if possible, what's your experience in these schools?

Getting better at Trig

I'm preparing for the Euclid and I feel confident in all areas except trig. For some reason, it's one area of math that's never stuck with me, and I find myself constantly forgetting the formulas and laws needed to solve basic trig problems. I'm attempting this problem:

http://i.imgur.com/p9GCt2K.png

I've gotten as far as labeling the sides root(89), x, and x - 3, but I don't know what to do after that. Am I supposed to try to solve x first? Theta? Tan(theta)? I don't know how to solve any of them.

I can find the solution to the above problem online easily, what I'm more interested in is a way to get better at this sort of stuff. Something like an online course teaching trig at this sort of level, or a textbook, or something? I'm not sure, if you guys have any suggestions let me know.

Thank you!

Grade 12 Physics for UTM????

1 reply • Last reply: 7:03AM March 02, 2015 UTC by mykee leeedo
Hi! I applied for Life Sciences at UTM and I plan to attend this university in the fall of 2015. I'm currently taking Grade 12 Physics, but I find it extremely difficult to understand the concepts and I'm worried it will bring down my overall average.

I was wondering if I should continue to take physics (though it isn't required or recommended at UTM) or if taking this course will help me in the future at this program at UTM.

I have no spares currently and my workload this semester is pretty heavy but I'm concerned that I will need to take physics in university next year (and I would rather get it over with if necessary). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Finding a Job with No Experience

Does anyone have any tips for finding a job with absolutely no experience? I'm going into my second year of undergrad at U of T but right now I'm at home living with my parents in the east GTA. I've been looking for a job since the end of March this year, still with no luck. I find this strange, considering my resume shows that I have a really strong academic background (graduated with the highest avg. of my high school class; 3.9 GPA) and extensive experience volunteering. Is it just because I've never had a formal job before? It seems so unfair; I'm willing to work hard, but even places like restaurants and retail stores will not hire anyone without at least one year's experience. Is there a way to break out of the whole "need experience to get experience" cycle?
