General questions regarding UofT

1 reply • Last reply: 7:03AM March 01, 2015 UTC by Shamaila Anjum
I am a grade 11 student in BC who is hoping to attend U of T. For the universities in BC, we have general faculties for first year(ie. science, commerce, arts, etc.) and nothing too specific (ie. computer science). I'm getting the feeling that for U of T, you need to know for sure what you want to be studying for four years when applying, rather than having the leeway of one year in university to explore and discover what you would like to do. Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I have tried to find admission requirements and they asked me for my province and program area (which is extremely overwhelming since I do not have too much of an idea of what I wish to study). Am I looking at the right website?
In addition to this, I have a few questions regarding U of T that would be of great help if you could answer them:
1) What are some negatives of attending UofT? Ie. I heard that it is extremely competitive and students tend to get overwhelmed, but does this not apply to other schools as well (or is it more here than other places)? Would you say that McGill, UofA, Queens, UBC, or any other university has the same atmosphere?
2) Does UofT really look at extra curricular activities or do they tend to focus more on grades?
3) I attend a linear school, so by the time I apply I should have my term 1 marks for grade 12 ready for application. Because of this, is there any reason for UofT to still look at my grade 11 marks? I have a 95% average, if that helps with anything.
4) I feel that I am confused with all of the campuses at U of T. Are there really six or seven? How did you choose which one you wanted to attend, or is it that each campus specializes in something different?
5) Do I need calculus 12 as a prerequisite for most of the programs at UofT?
6) How is the party scene at UofT?
7) Why did you choose to attend U of T? What was your average of 6 (?) marks?

Thank you for your time! I realize that I have a lot of questions, and I would be extremely grateful if you could try to answer them to the best of your abilities. :)

Hi All,

Was just wondering if the deadline is at 11:59PM on FEB. 28 or 11:59PM of March 1 because I tried submitting it at it said the character count was still too high (even though in Pages it was it was still under 1950), so i panic and tried to take out a word. By the time i did and it worked, the time was 12:01 AM on March 1.

So did i submit it late or not?!?!? Really freaking out here!!

Thanks in advance

Hi everyone,
I just got accepted to Comp Sci at UTSG victoria college and am waiting for an offer for engineering.
I have heard rumours that UTSG is very hard to get a good GPA and because of this, impossible to go to graduate school.
I was wondering if i should avoid UTSG if i want to get a good GPA and attend a good graduate school.

How can I salvage my MARKS?

4 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 01, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Ok my average last semester was a 88, marks were

Advanced Functions: 91
English: 93
Chemistry: 75
Computers: 94

I don't know if it's second semester blues but my marks so far for second semester are

Calculus: 67
Physics: 54
Peer Tutor: 90+

Is it too late to salvage these marks? Am I completely screwed? Should I drop out of highschool and roam the streets?

I've already gotten into Computer Science at York and Ryerson but I'm waiting to hear from UofT and Waterloo. I'm sure these marks don't help though.

I am truly scared that I don't get into the Life sciences program at U of T or the Medical Science program at Western. My marks aren't too great and I feel really really terrible :'(

These are my marks right now:
English - 78
Functions - 85
Chemistry- 82
French - 78

My average right now is an 81. This semester I have Biology, Calculus and Communications Technology. What marks do you think I would have to achieve to get into U of T or Western? Please help, I need motivation from you guys.

Just got waitlisted for sciences at UBC... is it all over? (IB)

10 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 01, 2015 UTC by Anonymous

I've had my heart set on UBC for quite a while now, and then just this afternoon I got the news that I was waitlisted on their student portal.

"We have evaluated your application and due to the competitive nature of your program, we are not able to offer you admission. Your application is currently wait-listed. Any changes to your application and wait-list status will be noted here and a final decision will be available to you by June 15th. Please note that a large number of wait-listed candidates do not receive offers of admission, and we encourage you to make alternate plans accordingly."

I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what my chances are of getting accepted, if at all. I'm a IB diploma student with a total predicted mark of 33. My predicted mark breakdown is:
6 - Chemistry SL, Geography HL
5 - Math SL, Spanish SL (final), English Lit. HL
4 - Physics HL (Trying hard to bring this up - is this mark the main cause of me being waitlisted?)
with 2 Predicted marks for TOK & EE.

Does anyone know of IB students who got accepted with around a 33 predicted? I realise that their website has listed a "recommended" average of 29-32 for admission, and I'd like to think my PP was strong (Good ECs, but who knows, since it's relative scoring). My waitlist message doesn't even say the "Strong candidate", which it appears a lot of others have.

Chances of getting in...anywhere??

2 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 01, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hi, so I sort of messed around first semester, and had to drop advanced functions and take it this semester. Because of this, I was unable to take calculus and my options for BBA/BCom programs I could apply to became quite limited. Here are my top six grades:
English- 90%
Challenge and Change- 90%
Families in Canada- 90%

Advanced Functions- 86% (as of right now)
Data Management- 85% (as of right now)
Canadian & World Issues- 93% (as of right now)

I know all of these questions are terribly repetitive, but I'm really worried about my university acceptances.
I applied to Laurier BBA, McMaster Business 1, Ottawa for Accounting w/co-op and I still haven't received a single acceptance. My guidance counselor assured me that this was due to my math marks being submitted later, but my mark in gr.11 functions was a 93, so I'm unsure why this is happening.

Should I be worried?

Mac Vs Carleton

3 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 01, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
So uhm, I'm 100% sure I want to work with mental health as a profession so I thought getting the cognitive science degree @ Carleton would highlight that. The issue isn't that I'm actually debating Mac over Carleton, it's more convincing my parents, a Cognitive science degree vs BA in psych would potentially be better for my future. I told them I booked my tour to Carleton and ofc, I get the "what about McMaster?" If it isn't obvious, Mac is home and they want me to stay home. This thread isn't about school reputation or anything, just wanting to opinions. If you were in my position, would you just go to Mac?

UTSC vs Waterloo Co-op Life Science

6 replies • Last reply: 7:03AM March 01, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
I was accepted into both UTSC Co-op Life Science and Waterloo Co-op Life Science. I've heard may things about the social life for both universities (like how UTSC is like a high school and isolated, and how Waterloo's is better, etc), and I've visited both. I was wondering if anyone can give me details on the programs themselves, and things about the co-op placements (heard that Waterloo has better co-op, but not that great in the science department). I'm pretty conflicted to where I should go since they seem pretty equal.
