Do people go into Consulting right out of undergrad??

8 replies • Last reply: 7:02AM February 28, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
So I've always been confused about this. On employment reports of undergrad schools like Ivey, Mcgill, queens etc, it shows percentage of people that went into consulting. Is this right out of undergrad? or is it long term surveys.

So my question is do people go into consulting right away or do you need experience first to consult

UBC Arts Transfer Fall 2015

5 replies • Last reply: 7:02AM February 28, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hi Everyone,

I'm a transfer student currently finishing second year at the moment. I've applied to UBC Arts, and my application status has been saying my file is ready for an evaluation for the past week and a half or so. Has anyone transferring received any word back from UBC Admissions? If so, would you mind sharing your average? :)

My average is sitting at approximately 77% based on my last 30 credits. Does anyone know what the usual cut off average is? I would also really appreciate any insight as to whether my average will be competitive for a third-year transfer or not? I've heard a lot of mixed claims, with some saying low seventies is all you need.

Thank you everyone!

Would switching schools from grade 11 to grade 12 affect my chances at Ivey/Queens?

0 replies • Posted: 7:02AM February 28, 2015 UTC
Hi, I am currently in the eleventh grade and I really want to go go back to my old school for grade 12. However, I would not make the change if this affected my chances for university acceptances. I have a few questions pertaining to the issue.

1.) Would Ivey or Queens see my transfer from grade 11 to 12 and find me unfit for the program and see that I am not committed?
2.)I have personally started the Relay For Life event at my new school and its a huge event celebrating life and the end to cancer. I got the idea myself from being a part of it in grade 10 at my first high school. Would I still be able to put that on my essays if I was back at my old school?

Sorry if it's a bit confusing. I just think my old school was a better fit for my academically and socially. Thanks!

Hi!! so I applied to Queen's BSc in jan. I have around an 87% average and I am taking Bio 12, Pre-Calc 12, Chem 12, Eng 12, FRAL 12, and I have completed Physics 12. I didn't take calculus 12 and I do regret not taking it. On the queen's website it says that calculus is recommended but it doesn't say it's required. Do i still have a chance to get accepted!!?

Just got waitlisted for sciences at UBC... is it all over? (IB)

8 replies • Last reply: 7:02AM February 28, 2015 UTC by ashkan akbari

I've had my heart set on UBC for quite a while now, and then just this afternoon I got the news that I was waitlisted on their student portal.

"We have evaluated your application and due to the competitive nature of your program, we are not able to offer you admission. Your application is currently wait-listed. Any changes to your application and wait-list status will be noted here and a final decision will be available to you by June 15th. Please note that a large number of wait-listed candidates do not receive offers of admission, and we encourage you to make alternate plans accordingly."

I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what my chances are of getting accepted, if at all. I'm a IB diploma student with a total predicted mark of 33. My predicted mark breakdown is:
6 - Chemistry SL, Geography HL
5 - Math SL, Spanish SL (final), English Lit. HL
4 - Physics HL (Trying hard to bring this up - is this mark the main cause of me being waitlisted?)
with 2 Predicted marks for TOK & EE.

Does anyone know of IB students who got accepted with around a 33 predicted? I realise that their website has listed a "recommended" average of 29-32 for admission, and I'd like to think my PP was strong (Good ECs, but who knows, since it's relative scoring). My waitlist message doesn't even say the "Strong candidate", which it appears a lot of others have.

Cut off for Laurier BBA? Second Round of Acceptances?

4 replies • Last reply: 7:02AM February 28, 2015 UTC by Spandex Whale
I'm hoping to get in for the second round of acceptances for Laurier BBA, which is based on a combination of your best 6 11/12 U/M courses, of which have to include a minimum of 3 12U/M courses. I've calculated my average and it should be a 88.83%. I know Laurier doesn't round up marks, but do you think I have a chance at getting in for second round??

Do I have a chance at getting into UBC Science?

1 reply • Last reply: 7:02AM February 28, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hi there, I applied for UBC Van General Science and I'm so worried about getting in! My grade 11 grades were as follows:

Physics 11: 89
Chem 11: 96
AP English 11: 95
French 11: 86
Precalc 11: 86
Social Studies 11: 97
(Those are my academic courses, I didn't count the electives)

Grade 12 marks:

Bio 12: 94
Chem 12: 89
Precal 12: 85
AP English: 98

That is my top 4. By the time I self report I'm hoping to go up a couple percent in Bio and possibly Chem because extra credit is available and teachers at my school will take off single tests u did badly on if the rest of your mark is consistently good to boost us for self reporting, but right now my average is 92%. As for my ECs, I listed being a team leader for a hospital volunteer program, being a lifeguard/instructor and swim coach, starting a business and online store to raise money for Science World and becoming a recognized donor, playing in the school band for 7 years and being a section leader, and being a part of the Future Science Leaders program at science world and conducting research with professors from UBC. Do you think I have a chance? I really am hoping to get my average up to 93ish. :(

Laurier BBA Acceptances?

5 replies • Last reply: 7:02AM February 28, 2015 UTC by Anonymous
Hey, so awhile back I got an email from Laurier explaining that acceptances will go out in 3 phases, where the second phase happens in march/april based on a combination of Gr11/12 marks. I was wondering if its the top 6 marks out of the gr11/12 marks, even if let's say I have 2 maths in my top mark, will they count both or just one? Sorry if this is confusing to understand, lol

3rd year Canadian medical student happy to answer questions!

UPDATE July 11, 2012:

My name is Josh, some of you might know me as the guy who started MedHopeful. For those of you who don't know me, I am currently a 3rd year Medical Student at UofT and I have run a blog called MedHopeful for almost 4 years now which provides stories and advice relating to undergrad, scholarships and medical school.

I originally wanted to remain anonymous in this thread because I was working on a few new projects (like a new group blog I had started) with some medical school classmates who wanted to remain anonymous. However, after long discussions and thinking, I decided to go back to primarily posting on MedHopeful. I also figured that I was OK not being anonymous (my friends still want to be, which is fine and I understand why).

In any case, I am happy to answer any questions, and for those of you who didn't know, I started a similar thread like this last year on the old Student Awards forums, which you might also find useful:

* * * * *

Hey everyone,

I am a 3rd year medical student at a Canadian medical school. My first 2 years were spent mostly in the classroom learning anatomy, physiology, disease, treatments, etc.

I started 3rd year in September 2011, and since then, I have been in "clerkship" - which means I have been working and learning full time in the hospital - seeing real patients everyday, and learning to diagnose/treat their illnesses. I have to say, it's very different from what I imagined. No matter how much you try to learn what it's like to practice medicine (e.g. shadowing), you really don't know what it's like until you do it.

I found these forums very helpful while studying in undergrad and applying to medical school. I'd like to give back by answering questions about medical school if anyone has any.

I'll try to be as honest as possible. I just won't be revealing any personal details as I'd prefer to remain anonymous.

Ask away! :)

P.S. I now blog everyday about med school life, getting in to med school, undergrad tips, etc. (see signature)

How to Choose the Right University for Me (Student Life, CO-OP, etc.)

0 replies • Posted: 7:02AM February 28, 2015 UTC
First of all, allow me to introduce myself. I am a 12th Grade student with an average ranging from an 88-92 depending on what program and the specific courses they require. I was recently admitted to Laurier and Queens for Computer Science, which is a huge relief, just knowing I'm going somewhere next year. However, something has been troubling me for quite some time now and I guess I'm just looking for some guidance based on experience or what not. If anyone has any words of wisdom they'd like to share, or any current University students with regret, I would love to hear it if you had two minutes to tell me about them.

Anyway, I applied to various schools ranging from Western, to Waterloo, to U of T, Guelph, etc. I am not worried about getting accepted. I have a sweet semester for midterm marks and a few killer extra-cirrikculars that have blown a few professors away. However, what I am worried about, is choosing the right school for me.

Waterloo is an awesome school, with an awesome CO-OP program — and I understand that people are always telling me "you'll find fun wherever you go," but for the 7 people I have talked to about going to this school, not a single one had something positive to say. They had remarks ranging from extremely boring, to even, depressing, and they regret is a huge amount.

Western and Queens are both awesome schools, and are well known, have that University experience, etc. However, they lack a CO-OP program which is a requirement in the Computer Science and Software Engineering industry. Getting a job is all based on having experience, and CO-OP is crucial to this, as I understand.

Guelph has an awesome program, as well as a fantastic CO-OP setup, however the school is very well known and doesn't really gather to 'impress' as I've heard. The campus is awesome, and the student life seems great from when I visited, but the housing is apparently the worst in Ontario.

All the other schools I applied to are, again, fantastic schools, but lack in factors that bring down where I want to go.

Again, as I said, there is no easy answer to this. In the end, it's what I desire the most and is my decision. I'm just looking for some guidance from people who have lived through the experience of choosing, or from someone who has already figured it out. Because every school on that list is awesome, but lacks something. And I know I want to be happy and have that awesome highschool experience, but I also want to have an easier future to look forward to, with experience.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
