7 Tips for Better Time Management and Study Habits During Final Exams

Final exams are arguably the most stressful time of the year. Balancing a full class load can be a challenge when you have multiple exams to prepare for while keeping up with other life commitments. Here are some tips to maximize your studying and help manage your time for your upcoming exams!

  1. Don’t procrastinate: All through high school and my first year of university, I would start studying for an exam the night before and cramming the hours leading up to the exam. As my classes began to get harder, I realized that I put way too much stress on my body with this bad habit. This past year I started studying for exams up to two weeks ahead of time. Studying a little bit every other day helps be better retain the information and minimizes the stress and anxiety I feel as the exam approaches.

2. Create a schedule: Creating a plan helps with procrastination. If you plan study time into your busy schedule, it will help you manage your time by freeing up time that you might otherwise put to other use.

3. Minimize the distractions: Learn what environment best works for you without getting distracted. If you study at home and get distracted by your roommates or refrigerator, try going to the library. If the library is too quiet for you and you get lost in your mind, trying studying with a friend to help keep you on task.

4. Take breaks: If you find yourself reading a paragraph over and over again without remembering what you just read, try taking a break. Your brain can only be productive for so long before it needs to rest. Going for a walk, eating a healthy snack, or just relaxing will let your brain relax and be must more productive when you start back up.

5. Find a study buddy: Discussing a topic from class with a classmate or explaining what you’re learning to a friend or family remember helps with learning the material. I have found that putting the information in my own words or associating the material with something I am already familiar with will help me remember it better. 

 6. Change it up: Try studying for multiple exams in one study session. When I switch up the content, it helps me be more engaged than reading the same power point over and over again. 

 7. Quiz yourself: testing your knowledge is the best way to see if you are prepared for an exam. It is easy to read over your notes again and again but how do you know if you have retained the information? Quizzing yourself helps you determine what information you know and what information you need to invest more time. 

 When looking through these tips, it is important to remember that everyone learns differently and has different lifestyles. If you are a first year or are still trying to figure out this whole studying thing out give some of these suggestions a try and see what works best for you. Creating your routine will help you better manage your time and help get that A+ on your next exam!

Something I will mention is that if you are taking a non STEM course then the key to doing well is to look at the bigger picture, rather than rote memorization.

It sucks because you will only retain that information for so long. If you actually take the time to learn it and understand it, it will last you a life time. This is particularly important if you will be pursuing a certification later on.

It is the best way to learn something quick and is a good quick way to do well on a exam. However for long term success, learning the information is more beneficial.
