Do I need French for community stuff at McGill?

I applied to McGill Biomed/Life sci and I want to go to medical school and become a doctor.

But yesterday, I was told by a family friend that if I were to go to McGill, I have to know French in order to volunteer in the community since it's mostly francophone outside of the campus. And even though McGill is an English school, most students prefer to speak French so if I only speak English, it'd be difficult to get a leadership position at school.

So my question is: Do I have to learn French to succeed in doing these and get into med school???

It would help if you're a current McGill student and you tell me how you're doing all these things but any other input is also greatly appreciated.

No you don't. They have tons of volunteering opportunities and they're almost all in English. I just finished my freshman year, and French isn't/wasn't an issue.
