Meat Markets?

A photo of Anonymous Anonymous
As a born-again organic-only vegan (occasionally freegan), I would like to know what the farmers' market scene is like at Western, particularly whether there will be 'meat markets'. I am strongly and fundamentally opposed to such gatherings, and would like to avoid them where possible.

Please - serious replies only. Thanks in advance.

You'll avoid a university because of meat markets?

Deal with it. Seriously.

It is rather lofty of you to tell me to "deal with" something that goes against my core ethical convictions. How would you like it if I told you to deal with something that goes against YOUR values? I hope I don't meet more people like you at university.

Aren't there adverts days before the market? And if you're an organic junkie, wouldn't the farmer's market be the best place to go? Also, most farmer's markets are in the summer, and unless you're in London for the summer, it shouldn't be much of a problem.

It's something that is a fundamental and required part of our society. If you don't like them then don't go near them, but you don't need to avoid a whole university because there might be a nearby university.

I'm not sure about Western...but if the same program was offered in Waterloo there's the St. Jacob's market which runs til late fall. It's about two buses from Laurier and 3 from Waterloo. It's seriously worth it though...the veggies/fruit are tasty and there's some organics as well.

I also noticed that if you live in Toronto you can have organic produce delivered to your door.

The St. Jacobs Farmer's Market is open all year round.

It's funny how you want to avoid people like Jess instead of dealing with them as you need to with your meat problem. Good luck in the real world avoiding all your problems and never dealing with all the bs that life has to offer.

I wouldn't mind knowing the same thing for Guelph.

There's no way of avoiding it really. A market is a place that meets everyones wants so you're going to see meat in ever single one, even the organic markets because people will be looking for organically raised meats.

I'm a vegetarian , and while looking at universities I definitely took the food options into consideration. I found that the majority of schools have a large selection of vegetarian choices/special dietary choices to choose from to meet everyone's need. Because after all, they want to be able to cater to everyone that attends their school , so I don't think finding organic vegetarian food should be too much of a problem :) However, about the meat markets, I'm unaware of any university that solely has a "meat market" if that's what you are worried about. Maybe a few would be in close proximity to a farmer's market, but really that's how farmer's support themselves, I don't think it should be too much of a problem if they happened to sell some meat, you can make the choice not too go near those particular booths.

There is a market called Covent Garden Market in downtown London. It's wonderful. There is meat inside the market but every Thursday and Sunday morning through the spring/summer/fall there is an outdoors farmer's market showcasing fruits and veggies, some of which are organic. I recommend that market but if you don't want to see meat, don't go inside, stick to the outside. (Although some of the meat is organic not that that matters!!).
