RBC Undergrad Scholarships

Hey alllll...

I know a lot of people applied for this scholarship, so I just had a question.
Does anyone know if there's a penalty for going over the word limit?
The first essay, the one about your hero, only allows for 100 words, and let's face it, it's nearly impossible to write an effective essay in 100 words.
I'm at about 120 words right now, but that's including the "words" that don't count.. like a, the, and...
Has anyone inquired them about this question? I e-mailed them but won't get a response for 48 hours, it'll be nearly too late then..

Thanks!

a, the, and are words...FYI. and i'm pretty sure they won't be happy if you go over the limit. it would be unfair to other applicants don't you think. mine is 100 on the dot. if i can do it you can too :)

I didn't say they aren't words..
just saying that when I write essays, I don't count them when I'm doing a word count.
:P
Blahhh
my second one is 500 on the dot, but the first one is so hard to cut down!

I managed to shorten mine to 100 words on the dot. Just take out some unnecessary sentences & you should be able to get it down to 100.

Yeah I rewrote the whole thing and managed to cut it off at 99 words.
Thanks though! :)

The reason they want it to be 100 words is because they want you to be as concise as possible. They want to see if you're capable of writing something meaningful in a limited amount of words. As well, what's more important is the 500 word essay which is more focused on you. This obviously would be more important because you're the one that will be awarded the scholarship.

Dumb question, (but I just want to make sure)
Is it cool if we leave one of the tables blank? (works experience, volunteer section)

Well, if you don't have the experience.. you don't have the experience.
Better to leave it blank than to make something up, because they will call your contacts to verify your activities.

I haven't even applied yet, fyi.
You can call it selfish if you'd like.
Just trying to save her the trouble before she gets screwed over!

It's impossible not to have volunteer experience though..what about those 40 hours requirement? If he/she does not have that, he/she would not even able to graduate.

I don't know what province she/you is/are from..
but where I'm from..
the hours we have to do to graduate can be paid hours as well.
And from what I know, you can't use paid hours when applying for scholarships.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone include stuff in those tables that wasn't between September 2009 and September 2010? Most of my volunteering was wrapped up in August 2009, which doesn't help me much...
Also, do you think it would look bad if all of my volunteering was in one place (for multiple initiatives)? It felt kind of awkward entering the same contact information for each entry.

Yeah I ran into the same problem. A lot of my volunteering was done prior to September 2009, though I still have a decent amount in the time frame given, but I didn't include things that were done before..
But I mean, if it was done in August 2009, I don't think it makes a HUGE differenece. Maybe just make a note of it somewhere.
As for the volunteering at one thing, I would say that is a GOOD thing. It shows your dedication to one place and one volunteering job.

Does that mean that any leadership you have done in Grade 12 (Sept 2010-Jun 2011) is not allowed?

Yeah, pretty much. Unless you did something in the beginning of grade 12.
And you can finish it in a day if you're good with essays.
I wrote both my essays yesterday in like 3 hours.

You can't even use your job on the application,
it has to be stuff that you do that ISN'T paid.

To clarify, there is a section for paid work.

The reason, in my opinion, they cut off at September is because that is when the application process started. They didn't want to penalize the organized students who applied early and couldn't count anything from grade 12.

So you can only use stuff from Sept 2009 - Sept 2010? So 11th grade?
