Re-taking Advanced Functions in Online School

A photo of Anonymous Anonymous
I completed 12 Advanced Functions last semester in day school and ended with a 70%. Even if I re-take and get an average mark like an 80%, my overall average goes up to 88%. It's my lowest course and brings down my average a ton. Which schools can you recommend to look at? Preferably ones that aren't too expensive - I looked at Virtual High School and their costs are $600.

Also for those of you who've taken it/ have friends who've taken it, is it difficult to complete? Especially considering I have a full course load at the moment.

Most of the unis I applied to have stated that they'll either take the highest average of the two credits, or take an average of the two, which I'm okay with.

I just started taking Advanced Functions through VHS for the same reason, and in my opinion it really is the best choice to take it through them if you are going to retake it. It is expensive, but it's a small price to pay if it will help you get accepted into your program/help you with scholarships! They have an upgrade course for functions, so they will only require you to do one assessment for each unit instead of the regular two which really helps with the course load! I've just started taking it but so far it doesn't seem too difficult.

Hey there OP,

I have friend who have taken VHS in the past. From their experience, it is a great choice if your school schedule is heavy and you need to have flexibility in your study time. You can work around your own schedule in terms of studying and when to take a test. In addition, their teachers are very responsive to student emails and concerns.

However, the exam average for many students are recorder to be  very low. The reason for this is because students become accustomed to having open book tests that they are not ready for a proctor supervised exam. If you were to go forward with VHS, or any online school for that matter, I recommend that you stick with a study schedule and prepare exam notes so that you will have an exam mark that reflects your test scores as well.

Best of luck,

Do it.  I took my advanced functions credit through VHS and it wasn't too bad.  It was tough, but if you've already taken it you'll get much higher than just an 80.  Make sure you give assignments your best effort and the inevitable grade drop for the exam won't hurt so bad.

Teacher is occasionally picky, but incredibly helpful when you're stuck on a question. I am working on the course right now, hit me up with questions.

For you guys taking it on VHS, can you please give me some advice? I may do the same.

I am currently taking it somewhere, but the teacher is stupid as screw and the classes are only on the weekend. Also, it's a private school, so I have to pay about $400. I still didn't pay him, but I will because I am hoping he can give me good marks. What would you advise me to do? Leave or stay and hope for a good mark? At the moment, the mark isn't very good since I'm fairly certain I failed the first test and assignment. I've since hired a tutor and things are looking pretty good now. My test on Saturday will tell.

What is the average completion rate it takes to do on VHS? Universities apparently want it finished by June. It is currently March 23. I finish my private advanced functions on April 28. Let's say I don't do well, is it advisable for me to do advanced functions VHS from May to June?

Let's say I get a bad mid term, how easy is it to drop it? How do they mark tests? Exam?

Thanks

I can help you out with VHS questions. The tests are all multiple choice, open book, 90 minutes. Some of the questions are extremely easy while others are more on the hard side. You can complete all 6 tests and about two assignments to reach midterm (35/70), or complete two units. I started in January and am only 30% done so far, but I can blame poor time management. It's possible you can finish it in two months but you would be stressed out, with two assignments and one test per unit. The mid-unit assignments are difficult for me to complete and they are worth 3.3%. Unit assignments are also at 3.3 whereas tests are at 4.4%. Exam is also multiple choice and online but a proctor is required to make sure you aren't cheating. They need to pass many of VHS' requirements, including having a university degree and being over the age of 18. You can also pay VHS $40 or so dollars to have an online proctor who will watch you through your webcam and check your microphone to make sure you're not cheating. Hope this helps.

Hey there anon,

Also, it's a private school, so I have to pay about $400.
At VHS, a grade 12 course is around $600-700.

What would you advise me to do? Leave or stay and hope for a good mark?
If you are not doing to well now, perhaps it is because the teacher's teaching methods are not very well suited for you and as a result, you are performing poorly. Perhaps, taking VHS is more suited for you. Having said that, you will need self-control and give yourself a schedule because VHS is 100% self directed.

What is the average completion rate it takes to do on VHS?
There currently is no cumilative data suggesting how long all the student take but I have heard people have done it in 2 weeks over the winter break. Others have taken 2-3 months given they worked on it 2-3 hours every day.

I finish my private advanced functions on April 28. Let's say I don't do well, is it advisable for me to do advanced functions VHS from May to June?
No, I would ill-advise because one month is almost guaranteed not enough time to finish VHS advanced functions. I would leave at least 2-3 months for completition time because there are 2 projects and a test  for every unit. In addition, the exam is a bit more difficult than their tests so you will need to study if you want a good mark.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.

Thank you, Benson and Anon, great responses.Just to clarify, I may not do VHS, I may do ILC. I thought VHS was free? Or was  I thinking about VLC? ILC courses are $40 (I THINK) so I am shocked that VHS is a lot more. ILC wouldn't be a good idea then, would it? May 4th is the last day that universities will accept marks, and it's almost April. If I started in April, July is the last day month that OUAC can send the marks. ( according to this, or maybe im reading it wrong https://www.ouac.on.ca/guide/101-dates/)

Also, I have data management, international business, and family studies offered next semester in my school. To give some background, here are my courses I am using for Ted Rogers business commerce and York business commerce:
world issues 82
eng4u 85
fitness leadership 82
challenge and change 84
boh4m (expecting 80-85)
family studies (expecting 80-85) which total average to about 82
next semester is offered data management or international business in the same period. Which one should I take? Ryerson will accept based on data management. Or should I not do any courses online?

Benson is much better with responses than I am lol. Now I am not 100% sure, but I thought ILC is only for adults who are not full-time students in day school or your school has to be with ILC in order for you to sign up for courses. And from my experience, International Business was a much easier course than Data Management and I got a higher mark, but Ryerson used my data mark as a math pre-req and I got my acceptance. You can contact me on Facebook if you wish

VHS is virtual high school and it is operated as a business (link below)

$600-700 is on the higher end of the price range for private schools but I usually dont see anything below $300-400.

Also, I have data management, international business, and family studies offered next semester in my school
To clarify, are you in grade 12? It is currently second semester.

In terms of international business vs data, it depends on what you think is a better fit for your schedule. Data management definitely has more homework as there are daily hw questions. That being said, if you take adv fun outside of school, you need to be disciplined enough to really meet that May 4th deadline.

You also need to be mindful that even after you take the exam, VHS needs around a week to process the exam and send it to OUAC, so technically your deadline is late april, giving you a little over a month to complete a course, which is very tight.

I am confused however you have a 'semester' coming up. Is your school broken down into 2 semesters (as most schools are) or are you 4 semesters/year?

I would be happy to contact you. I really want to know if my marks are enough to gain admission.

I've heard from a lot of people that they got their admission from Data management, but they got really high marks in it, around the 85 and higher range. Moreover, other people told me that I should focus on getting at least 75 in advance functions and that will be enough to gain admission. Here's the problem. If I don't get 75, I will not be admitted. If I get 80ish in Data, I think I will.... but I am not sure. If I did international business, I would most likely get a higher mark since my writing skills are better than my mathematics skills.

I would be delighted to know your courses, marks, and average alongside marks in prerequisites that got you admission.

Footnote: I originally wanted to do engineering, then I changed my mind. I took a year off and here I am.
