Universities only look at your top 5-6 marks right?

Currently, I'm doing poorly in Social Studies..However, this is not going to be used for university as in only going to be my needed courses for universtiy. I need to know if the university will or will not look at the other grades that are not going to be used. I think they get your transcript anyways..so..if they see it..will it matter? will these courses eopardize my chance? if no..hmmm..should i just slack these off and work on something that are being used for university?
In particular..I'm talking about university of alberta and waterloo..
Thanks guys

Universities look at your pre-reqs and the quantity of marks they see is dependent on which province you are from.

It's 6 not 5. Depending on the school and program it's either just your top 6 (whatever courses) or your top 6 including your prereq's (so since i had 4 they counted those and my other 2 top marks)
