UTM - Commerce?

A photo of larryparry larryparry
Hey all,
I need your advice.

I am taking economics currently and planning to take math and accounting during this summer. I really want to get into commerce. I am trying to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Will I get in this year?

Btw, I didn't take management. Will that affect me? I emailed one of the commerce/management admin and she said, "if I get into commerce, then I can take it this September."

I am really confused...

Any tips? Advices?

first you MUST apply to subject post for commerce by the deadline. once you take accounting and math and complete those courses if your gpa is above the cutoff you will be invited to commerce.

im assuming you didnt take mgm101? you have to complete that by end of 2nd year. its an easy course, i took it way back. pure memorization.

word of warning, math usually drops your gpa, accounting might too if you take it for granted.

Hey Jdot,
I did apply the subject post 2 weeks ago.

Really? Math and accounting drops your GPA?
My God, this is worse than what I expected!!!

I always thought summer school is much easier. No?
Some of my seniors also mentioned that it's always a best thing to take challenging courses during summer. Hmm....

Btw, I feel that Commerce GPA will be significantly higher this year...There are minimum 1200 applying and they are accepting ONLY 300...I feel really bad for other 900 students...They tried their best too...phew..is it always like that?

they wont drop your gpa if you put the time into the course. summer school runs double the speed, so less margin for error. I always took easy courses in the summer for distribution requirements because it was better to get them out of the way. harder courses you want to do year round so you can learn and thoroughly understand the content.

300 now? back when i was applying for commerce years back it was 180-200. and most people had guaranteed offers, do they still do that?

also if you dont get into commerce after 1st year you can always retry end of 2nd. just take the 3 eco courses required and some electives. if your gpa is good enough then you will be invited.

edit: the gpa for commerce shouldnt be higher than 2.9-3.0 usually. most people with very high gpas transfer to other programs like Rotman, UTSC co-op etc.

im in 1st year at UTM too,

if you take math in summer, have fun. I hate mat133 with a passion. the prof is so bad. she purposely made test 3 hard to make people drop.

what really gets me mad is the fact that i got a guaranteed commerce offer out of high school, but that means nothing anymore since they changed the admission standards.

so now instead of just getting a 2.5, i have to compete with everyone to get in.

I recommend applying to other subject POSTs if you dont get in, I choose accounting specialist, economics specialist, and eco major.

WOW...I know eh Matt...They did change it.
If a person who got into anthro or something (example) and a person who got into commerce comepete and the anthro person gets a higher GPA, the anthro person has more preference...It's annoying. We all worked hard in hs to get a good grade to get into a good program, but now we have to work superhard to get into the "actual" program...lol...Anyways, I really hope I get a good prof for summer...hmm...Btw, who did you take econ with? I had it with Bailey!!! It will take me the whole day to write about him and he is a nightmare...lol...personality wise...But I think he is reasonable teaching wise. Well, I guess we will be having him in the 2nd year as well.

I feel bad for Ho's class...I hope u know y.

Btw, I applied to Commerce-Accounting, Econ-Major and HRM Industrial Relations-Major.

I really hope we will get into commerce...hmm...But they will only consider me in Sept as I will complete math at that time...It's gonna be a nightmare for next 5 months!!!

Advanced wishes to you =)

Why do you feel bad for Ho's Class?

Hey Nannah,
It's because prof. Bailey is the one who will be teaching economics for the following years. Ho's is just for this year, and maybe next year (like prof.Cohen). Bailey is the fixed input while others are variable input. Also, Ho is a new prof to UTM and has no past exams, tests to help you be prepared. Also, Ho just uses the "theories" rather than the "applications." So I prefer prof. Bailey, eventhough he is awkward at times. But on the other hand, who is straight all the time? No one...

Hope my post didn't any Ho's students. Just gave out my opinions.
