You want the most calories for your dollar. I think rice is one of the best.

No kidding! :o

And I'm thinking of between a ramen (with rice) diet or mac and cheese diet...

If your res has a mini fridge, things like fruit, yogurt, and veggies and dip could be good options. Vegetarian options tend to be cheaper as well, for example hummus and crackers. There are also some really convenient microwaveable pasta bowls that you can buy at M&M's that taste really good and are very inexpensive!

Biggest thing I've found is to be aware of prices from all the stores and distance.
In my case, the cheapest place is a forty minute walk from my house. Where the next best place is a ten minute walk.
In the end I'll pay a little(and by little I mean barely) for that shorter walk since it's not that big of a difference. But if it is, don't get lazy, walk! bike! or take the bus. Your wallet will thank you.

Also key ways to save money and still eat decently.
-buy fresh chicken, pork, fish ect. in 8 packs and freeze them individually so they last you longer.
-buying multiple loaves of bread and freezing the others.
-Limiting the amount of times you have to go to the grocery store is key to spending less.
