As a prerequisite, no. In every commerce/business program I know of thus far, you do need accounting for at least the first year, so the knowledge may be useful to have.

If you ever find a commerce program that neglects accounting you'll know that it's screwed up from the start.

Accounting IS the language of business.

You can't learn finance without a base in financial accounting knowledge.
You can't effectively learn managerial accounting without financial accounting.
You can't study higher level cases on business policy and make legitimate managerial decisions without a base of finance and managerial accounting knowledge.

Takng grade 11 and 12 accounting made the accounting portions of my 1st and 2nd year sooooo much easier. It was almost the same material even in 2nd year just the degree of difficulty was a lot harder.
