The Only Majors to Go to University For
Ok so I see high school kids talk about going into art or business, and I think to myself, " well I will be seeing you in four years making my coffee". So I have to write this, because I fell for the trap. Every year high school kids think about going to university and spending thousands of dollars to study a hobby. I attended queens commerce for my undergrad, and learned the hard way. College majors such as English, political science, business, social sciences, humanities, psychology are all scams(to the most part). In this forum, business major seems to be the most popular, as I was one a couple of years ago. When I got accepted, I was so happy because I heard all the good stories of students going to work at big financial and consulting firms. This is not true. In theses so called " top Canadian business schools", the students are misinformed. Only a few and I mean a few go work in these big firms, while the rest works at crappy places. Today, everyone has a business major, so the job market is sh*t. Majors like English and humanities, are the biggest scam also, because high school kids think they are hoping to be the next Shakespeare, but instead they will be making sandwiches at McDonalds. Also pre med is another scam. If you major in biology, but do not get into med school, you are then useless. Unless you spend 5-6 years getting a PhD, your bio degree has 0 value. As the job market gets tougher and tougher, people need to realize that only a handful of college majors make the student more valuable. Examples, such as engineering, accounting and computer science. I wanted to rant about this because High school kids need to know about the trap of university majors.

McMaster Health Science Program-2017 Applicants
Hey guys,
I am going into grade 12 in September. I have been doing a lot of soul searching about what kinds of programs and stuff I wish to apply to. One of my top choices is McMaster Health Sciences and I'm sure it is many other peoples top choices as well. Ever since I was young i knew I wanted to do something in the health field, mainly to help other people out. I have always LOVED science, especially biology and chemistry. We can use this discussion page to talk about the program and stuff.

These are my other top programs:
-Life Sciences at McMaster
-Medical Sciences at Western
-Health Sciences at Western
-Biochemistry at Western
-Biomedical Science at Waterloo

If anyone was or is in McMaster's Health Science program, I was wondering what do you think makes a successful applicant? How did you decide to enter this program?

Thanks

Best Study Tips from Top Students
Hi guys,

I am interested in what your study strategies and tips are for succeeding in university. Even if you are in high school, I am curious to know about things that have been effective for you that can also be applied later on in life. Any lessons you learned? Stories with morals to them?

Thanks in advance.

AMA: UofT First Year Engineering Student (Track One). Ask about university, engineering, other subjects, admissions…whatever!
EDIT: Just to give another update, I'm half-way through 3rd year right now. Just went through the PEY process and wrapped that up, so if you have any questions on any of that, I'd be more than happy to share some firsthand experiences!

I was also accepted to Waterloo, Ottawa, and Mac way back when, so you can ask q's about those as well.

Western Med Sci: Just finished 3rd year, cumulative 4.0, AMA
Basically what I said above. I just finished my third year at Western Med Sci! I know choosing a university is tough (I had a really tough time choosing) and trying to determine how you'll do at university is stressful, but let me know what questions you have and I'll do my best to answer them!

Also, despite being in third year, I can definitely answer questions about first year and all other years. I've been pretty engaged with helping out first years, so I know a decent amount about all years (or at least I like to think I do haha).

Update: I just got into med school, so feel free to ask those questions as well.

Will I be suitable for Ophthalmology?
Hey!
I'm in grade 11 and going into grade 12, as of now my marks have not been the best and I'm going to be starting to work efficiently and more productively. I've had bad study habits and have been procrastinating on work throughout grades 9-11 and thats reflected in my marks.

My grade 11 marks:
were bad....

So clearly my marks aren't good and I know that i've been screwing up somewhere and i've realized that it's within my study habits. I just waste time browsing or watching videos that I start my work late and hence don't do well and don't get enough sleep. In the end im left without energy since i'm sleep deprived and can't adhere to the class lessons and knowledge being taught by my teachers. I think the studying environment maybe bad for me since i'm at home and surrounded by family, i think it would be better if I spent my time outside at say the Library working and studying to understand what I'm learning.

I know that i'm a determined student, if I put my heart to it and considering the Grade 12 is the year that counts and is most important in my case - I will be working and giving my 100% at all times.

I know that becoming an Ophthalmologist is not something that happens fast and takes time so I'm willing to dedicate myself to it now since i haven't dedicated myself to anything yet. I know that in the end it'll pay off and I'll be able to look back and see what I've achieved and come past.

As a person, i'm very caring and like to work with people and learn more about them and try to help everyone that I can. I've always been like that and I think becoming some sort of Physician would be one of the best choice for me.

So yeah i'm just putting this question out there, do you think I can pull this off or would i be better off going into the Finance industry?

Take the time to read through these if you want to be informed about how the job market is for new university graduates. Most BA and BSc holders cannot find work, they have to resort to doing jobs that pay just a little above minimum wage. In case you don't make it into professional school, which has less than 10% acceptance rates, consider what other career opportunities are available to you with your chosen degree path? Why are you going to university in the first place? Who is financing your education? What do you hope to make out of your degree?
