I just want to be happy
It is the grade 12 year for me so I will shortly be applying to university. Every time someone asks me what I want to do in the future (ex: doctor, lawyer), my answer is simple; I want to be happy. They all laugh, which to be honest, baffles my mind. Isn't that the goal in life? To be happy? I really haven't found that thing that truly makes me happy, and therefore, I do not know what to study in university or even if I should go to university. Is anyone else in the same position?

Christmas vacation in University
Is it safe to assume I will be able to join my family on vacation over Christmas holidays while in university?
It's between semesters so I assume it's ok. But I might be missing something.

The Transition from High School to University
Let’s face it. The transition from high school to university is a frightening one and if you are someone like me who had a million questions with no answers, one can easily feel lost. Whether it is choosing the right post-secondary institution to attend, a particular career path to pursue, or be it the first time that you have lived away from home, we will all encounter obstacles that will make this chapter of our life an adventure. Today, I am going to help tackle the burning topics that pondered my mind as I made the transition from high school to university.

First and foremost, how difficult is university compared to high school? This question was continuously on my mind throughout my senior year of high school and having finally experienced my first semester at the University of Calgary, I can definitely say that it is a step up and a learning curve. From learning to manage one’s time to the depth in which we have to understand course material, it really is a change from high school. Having said that, it is still manageable and the workload varies depending on the program/faculty that you enroll in! No matter how your first-year turns out, always stay motivated to do well because it honestly will get better as the years go on and as you adapt to the new learning environment!

It is without question that across the nation, the cost of post-secondary tuition is expensive. Tacking on the cost of books, living expenses, and personal entertainment, one’s debt can get dauntingly large. Help reduce that scary number by applying for scholarships and bursaries! Remember, grades are not the only criteria that selection committees look at when choosing recipients for their awards (In fact, many awards don’t require high grades!). Work on your portfolio (whether it is volunteering, playing sports, etc.) and be yourself; it truly is the key to winning scholarships! Also realize that while moving away from home may seem like a fun experience, it definitely is not a necessity for enjoying university and could quickly add up your debt. Don’t be shy to stay at home throughout your post-secondary lives, because not only does it allow you to keep some coins in your wallet, but also relieves some of the stress that comes with living on your own!

Campus Life

The first thing that you will notice when you enter your first week of studies is the amount activities that are going on. From the many clubs (U of C has over 300!), to the daily social events, there is always a place for you to find your niche. Also, be sure to learn about the various resources that are available to you! Whether you need some extra support academically, looking for some activity to do, or just need someone to talk to, there is always a resource to help you along the way! Yes, the large campus and amount of students can make you feel like a drop in the sea, but don’t be intimidated! Make your mark, get involved, and have some fun!

University Experience
Hi! So in about a year or so, I will finally be starting university and I am super nervous yet very excited at the same time. Currently the high school I am attending is quite difficult and is often called the university "prep" school because of the amount of work we get. Although I am a little reassured by this fact, I'm still skeptical on the validity of it. How much harder is university compared to high school and what does a typical week usually look like (amount of tests, assignments, etc.)???

No friends in High School, the proceedings of University
Man, it feels bad that I have barely made any friends during my 4 years in high school. Now with graduation coming up in a few months I'm am starting to feel the depths of my loneliness. I've always been relatively introverted and tend to keep to myself, not in a arrogant way. It's is just the way I feel most comfortable with.

I've been accepted into my top choice for University and hope to change myself for the better of transitioning into a more vibrant person who does not lack social skills. My goal is to enter medical school, and with my social awkwardness, I think it will cripple me in the future.

Sometimes I get annoyed at the people in my school - the one's that don't study and have high expectations for themselves - because they tend to always bother me because I am usually at the top of the classes, however, I participate in varsity sports.

How has University been for anyone who was in a similar scenario as my self in high school?

How math heavy is Laurier BBA?
I know you have a choice of which math to take but they all sound like calculus? If there an advanced functions/stats/data type math I can take first year instead?
